Red-Breasted Parakeet is an Indian Bird that bears a scientific name "Psittacula alexandri". It is among the more widespread species of the genus and is the species which has the most geographical variations.

Concentration of Red-Breasted Parakeet
The most of the subspecies of Red-Breasted Parakeet are confined to small islands or a cluster of islands in Indonesia. One subspecies occurs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and one subspecies occurs in continental Southeast Asia and partly extending to north-eastern parts of South Asia along the foothills of the Himalayan Mountain Range. Some of the island races may be threatened by the wild bird trade. The nominate race, which occurs in Java, is close to extinction.

The feral populations of Red-Breasted Parakeet have now established themselves in cities like Mumbai, Maharashtra in west India and small numbers occur in other cities such as Chennai and Bengaluru in the southern most part of India.

History of Red-Breasted Parakeet
The scientific specific name of Red-Breasted Parakeet commemorates Alexander the Great whose armies introduced eastern parakeets to Greece. It was the first eponym in scientific avian nomenclature in its original form of Psittacus alexandri Linnaeus, in the year 1758.
