The Group A of the Elite Group in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 consisted 8 teams and the teams had no similarity in their geographical positions. The teams were mainly representing different states from different parts of India in the most popular domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Andhra, Himachal Pradesh, Bengal, Rajasthan, Delhi, Railways, Hyderabad and Mumbai and the teams gave their best efforts to claim the top spot in the group. Securing a berth in the knock out level was also another principal objective of all the teams, however, only the teams like Delhi and Mumbai could eventually do so from the group. The Delhi and Mumbai teams earned the highest point from the group level matches and they went on to compete with the top teams from the other group in the knock out level for the championship title.

The first of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 was played between the teams of Andhra and Himachal Pradesh and the two teams played the match at Vishakhapatnam from 09-12 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Andhra team earned 1 point from the match, while the Himachal Pradesh team remained pointless. The teams of Bengal and Rajasthan were involved in the second match of the group and the match was held at Kolkata from 09-12 November, 2002. None of the teams could earn even a single point from the drawn match. The Delhi team played against the Railways team in the third match of the group and the match took place at Delhi from 09-12 November, 2002. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Delhi team earned 1 point from the match. However, the Railways team failed to earn any points from the match.

The teams of Hyderabad and Mumbai played against each other in the fourth of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match was held at Secunderabad from 09-12 November, 2002. The Mumbai team clinched a victory of 69 runs in the match for earning 2 points and the Hyderabad team remained pointless in the match. The next match of the group saw the teams of Bengal and Himachal Pradesh playing against each other at Kolkata from 17-20 November, 2002. The Himachal Pradesh team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Bengal team failed to earn any points from the match. The Hyderabad and Andhra teams then met with each other in the next match of the group and the match took place at Secunderabad from 17-20 November, 2002. The drawn match saw the Hyderabad team earning 1 point from it and the Andhra team remaining pointless.

The match between the teams of Mumbai and Delhi was the seventh of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match was held at Mumbai from 17-20 November, 2002. The Mumbai team earned 2 points from the match by clinching a huge victory of 9 wickets and the Delhi team remained pointless in the match. The Rajasthan team then played against the Railways team in the next match of the group and the match took place at Jaipur from 17-20 November, 2002. The Railways team earned 1 point from the match and the Rajasthan team failed to earn any points from it. The Bengal team then played against the Railways team in the next match of the group and the match was held at Siliguri from 27-30 November, 2002. The Bengal team clinched a narrow victory of only 3 wickets in the closely contested match and earned 2 points from it. The Railways team could not earn any points from the match.

The Delhi and Himachal Pradesh teams then met with each other in the tenth of Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 27-30 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Delhi team earned 1 point from it. The Himachal Pradesh team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group saw the teams of Mumbai and Andhra playing against each other at Mumbai from 27-360 November, 2002. The winner of the match was the Mumbai team with a margin of an innings and 72 runs for earning 3 points and the Andhra team remained pointless in the match. Then, the teams of Rajasthan and Hyderabad met with each other in the next match of the group and the match took place at Jaipur from 27-30 November, 2002. The Rajasthan team earned 2 points from the match by clinching a victory of 4 wickets and the Hyderabad team failed to earn any points from the match.

The Delhi team played against the Andhra team in the next match of the Elite Group A and the match was held at Delhi from 19-22 December, 2002. The match was won by the Delhi team with a margin of 7 wickets and the team also earned 2 points from the match. The Andhra team could not earn any points from the match. The Hyderabad and Bengal teams met with each other in the next match of the group and the match took place at Secunderabad from 19-22 December, 2002. The teams of Railways and Mumbai were involved in the next match of the group and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 19-22 December, 2002. The 16th of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 was played between the teams of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh and the match was held at Jaipur from 19-22 December, 2002. The Rajasthan team clinched a victory of 6 wickets for earning 2 points from the match and the Himachal Pradesh team failed to earn any points from the match. The Andhra and Railways teams then appeared in the next match of the group and the match took place at Vijayawada from 28-31 December, 2002. The Railways team earned 1 point from the match and the Andhra team could not earn any points. The Himachal Pradesh team then played against the Hyderabad team in the next match of the group and the match was held at Bilaspur from 28-31 December, 2002. The drawn match saw the Hyderabad team earning 1 point and the Himachal Pradesh team remaining pointless. The next match of the Elite Group A involved the teams of Mumbai and Bengal and the match took place at Mumbai from 28-31 December, 2002. The Mumbai team won the match with a huge margin of 9 wickets to earn 2 points and the Bengal team failed to earn any points from the match. The last of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 was played between the teams of Rajasthan and Delhi and the two teams played the match at Jaipur from 28-31 December, 2002. The winner of the match was the Delhi team with a good margin of an innings and 11 runs and the team also earned 3 points from the match. However, the Rajasthan team failed to earn any points from the match.
