Ramesh Kumar is an Indian wrestler who earned the Bronze Medal at the 2009 Wrestling World Championship held in Herning, Denmark, in the Men`s 74 kg Freestyle Wrestling event. Purkhas situated in Sonipat district of Haryana is his birthplace. Ramesh Kumar entered the world of wrestling at a very young age. He was a school student when his maternal grandfather sent him to the "Akhada" of Capt. Chand Roop and Chotu Ram, in the year 1994. Akhada was the school of "pehlwani", which is the Indian style of wrestling, situated at Azadpur, Delhi.
In the year 1997 he bagged a Gold Medal at the 11th World Cadet Wrestling Championships, while he was studying in the Jahangirpuri Government School in ninth standard, in the 63-kg category. He once again won a Gold Medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in 66 kg category. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, he represented India in Men`s Freestyle 66 kg category. He switched to 74 kg category after the year 2004. At the 51st National Championship, in the year 2005, he was the winner in the 74 kg freestyle. Ramesh Kumar however missed 2008 Olympics owing to his back injury. In FILA Wrestling World Championships, held in the year 2009 he recorded his victory by winning a Bronze Medal. After Vishambhar Singh`s Silver Medal in 1967, Ramesh Kumar became the first Indian to win a freestyle medal at the World Wrestling Championship in 42 years.
