Instrumental to the success of the Phogat sisters, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a Dronacharya awardees" wrestler, is not the only member of the Phogat family who was behind the accomplishments of the wrestlers. It was Rajpal Phogat, the younger brother of Mahavir Singh, a forgotten name, who also wanted his daughters to be ace wrestlers.
Life of Rajpal Phogat
Rajpal Phogat was married to Premlata and had 2 daughters Vinesh and Priyanka Phogat and a son named Harvinder Phogat. When Vinesh was just 8 years old, Rajpal Phogat was murdered due to a family dispute over land. After his demise, his wife Premlata was diagnosed with cancer and their family had to suffer through a lot of tough times but with the unwavering support of his elder brother, Mahavir Singh the family of Rajpal Phogat survived. Even Rajpal Phogat"s father, Man Singh Phogat, who was an ace wrestler in his time, was against the idea of women participating in a sport, which is primarily dominated by men.
Unfortunately, Rajpal Phogat could not witness the triumphs of his daughters, like his daughter Vinesh Phogat become the first female wrestler of India to win a gold in the Asian Games in the year 2018.
