Rabi Ghosh was born on 24th November 1931 in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. His real name was Rabi Ghosh Dostidar. He completed his Matriculation from the South Suburban Main School in 1949 and after his ISC examination; he joined Ashutosh College, under University of Calcutta, for completing graduation. However, this brilliant actor could not resist his desire for acting and left his studies midway. The first employment of Rabi Ghosh was in Bankshal Court from 1953 to 1959. First he married actress Anubha Gupta, after her demise, he married Baishakhi Devi on 24th November, 1982.
Career of Rabi Ghosh
Rabi Ghosh is prominent for his comic roles in Bengali movie, though his flexible acting talent has astounded viewers and critics alike in a variety of roles. A role for Rabi Ghosh was a regular phenomenon in Satyajit Ray cinemas. Rabi Ghosh was a renowned name in Bengali theatre and TV as well. The character of Bagha in Satyajit Ray`s Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series of films is one of the most unforgettable characters done by Rabi Ghosh. However, he had performed different shades of roles, but his role as a comedian is still valued by all movie lovers.
Rabi Ghosh`s brilliant performance in the play "Angar" was observed by the Director Aurabinda Mukhopadhay and he offered him a small role in his film "Ahoban" in 1959.
However, his performance in Satyajit Ray`s Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne (1968) proved to be a landmark in his career and he is still affectionately remembered as Bagha by all. Abhijan, Aranyer Din Ratri (1970) Heerak Rajar Dese (1980), Goopi Bagha Phire Elo (1991), Padma Nadir Majhi (1993) are some of his milestone movies.
Rabi Ghosh was also a noted theatre personality and a student of Utpal Dutta`s Little Theatre Group. Rabi Ghosh travelled extensively abroad to perform in Berlin (1969), Mauritius (1988), USA and Europe in (1995). Rabi Ghosh also directed the famous movie "Nidhiram Sardar". In 1970, he actively participated in the world famous Berlin Film Festival as the lead actor of Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne. Rabi Ghosh founded the theatre group "Chalachal".
Rabi Ghosh passed away on 4th February, 1997 and the nation lost one of its great legends.
Awards Received by Rabi Ghosh
In 1960 he was conferred with the Ultorath Award for his outstanding performance in the play "Angar". He also received the Anandalok Award for Nayantara in 1998 (Special Jury Award)
