Rani Durgavati University was set up in the year 1956 by Jabalpur University Act 1956 and was named after great queen Rani Durgabati. The University has been recognised by the University Grant Commission. The main objective of the University is to increase literacy and socio-economic status of the tribal region and rural areas. There are 118 affiliated colleges to the University including 66 State Government funded colleges, 7Autonomous Colleges and 17 Research Institutes. Those colleges conduct 38 Post-graduate, 18 Undergraduate and 8 diploma courses.
The University offers over 100 courses in various disciplines through the departments of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Sociology, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Adult Education & Extension Work, Education, Physical Education, Tribal Studies, Library & Information Science, Law, Journalism & Communication Studies, Biological Sciences, Physics & Electronics, Chemistry, and Mathematics & Computer Science. The University also has a Science Instrumentation Centre, a Yoga Centre, a centre for Woman Study & Development, a Macromolecular Research Centre and an Institute of Management. The University received the B++ status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
