Located about 25 km from Ratnagiri in Ratnagiri district in the state of Maharashtra, the Purnagad Fort is one of the important forts in the state and district. The hill fortress of Purnagad stands at an elevation of 300 ft and spreads over an area of 22 acres on the banks of the Muchkundi River.

History of Purnagad Fort
The Purnagad Fort was built in 1724 by the head of the Maratha navy, Admiral Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre. There is not sufficient records surrounding the history of the fort but it was believed that it was one of the forts of Shivaji, the Maratha Emperor. During the Peshwa rule, the Purnagad Fort exacted less revenue.

Overview of Purnagad Fort
Currently in ruins, the Purnagad Fort is rectangular in shape and was built from black basalt rocks. The entrance to the fort is made out of lateritic stone and has the images of the Sun, Moon and Lord Ganesh engraved in the middle. There is also a Maruti idol at the entrance and located near the fort is a Hanuman temple, which is an important landmark. Inside the fort premises, there is a holy basil stand along with ruins of other fort structures. Presently, the Purnagad Fort is preserved and protected under the Government of India.
