Puri is revered as the Holy Land of Lord Jagannath. History of Puri began from the time of Puranas. The ancient name of Puri was Charita which was as identified by General Alexander Cunningham of the Archaeological Survey of India. From 318 AD, Puri was ruled by Rashtrakuta Dynasty. Later Kalinga became the seat of administration and with the aid of emperor Ashoka, Puri became the place of Buddhism learning. Jagannath temple was constructed in 1138 AD, by the hands of Eastern Ganga Dynasty. After the decline of Muslim rule in India, British Empire in India began to rule and made it a Princely State when it was ruled by Gajapati Empire.
