Pune International Airport is also known as Lohegaon Airport that shares its runway with the Lohegaon Air Base. It is located around 10 kilometres north-east of Pune in the state of Maharashtra. It is controlled by the Airports Authority of India. This airport operates both with domestic and with international flights.
History of Pune International Airport
Pune International Airport was established in 1939 as Royal Air Force Poona to provide air security to the city of Mumbai. The Pune International Airport was declared as a customs airport in January 1997 for the export of individual goods.
Structure of Pune International Airport
Airports Authority of India constructed 2 new terminal buildings for international passenger departures and arrivals, which was insufficient for the boost in passengers and flight operations. The new buildings have helped alleviate peak-time pressure of air passengers. Two aerobridges were also commissioned in 2011. The runway is also under renovation and will be extended. There is a proposal of starting cargo facility from this airport.
