In the Gaura ganoddesa dipika Pundarika Vidyanidhi is portrayed as the father of Srimati Radharani in Krishna lila. Therefore Chaitanya treated him as his father. His original home was in East Bengal, in Baghiya a village near Dhaka. He belonged to the Varendra group of brahmana families. One special characteristic of this family is that each of its members had only one son or no son at all, and therefore the family was not very expansive. The birthplace of Pundarika Vidyanidhi is about two miles southwest of Annapurnara-ghata.
Pundarika Vidyanidhi was called "father," by Chaitanya. Later he became the spiritual master of Gadadhara Pandita and an intimate friend of Svarupa Damodara. Gadadhara Pandita had initially misunderstood Pundarika Vidyanidhi to be an ordinary man. However later on he was corrected by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and became his disciple.
