Pumsavana is a Hindu rite where the child in the womb is consecrated. This takes place after the conception of a child becomes obvious. This is performed when the moon is on a male constellation. This time is regarded prosperous for producing a male issue. Here the pregnant woman consumes one bead of barley and two beads of black grain with little curd which is accompanied by religious chanting.
Sweets are offered to her by the relatives. This ceremony is performed in the third month of pregnancy or sometimes even later. This ritual is executed only once. This is an important prenatal rite. Pumsavana is performed during the first pregnancy of the women. Pumsavana literally means procreation of a male child. Susruta has described the procedure in Sushruta Samhita. The herbs should be pounded with milk and three or four drops are instilled in the right nostril of the pregnant woman. She should not cough out the juice.
