Introduction

Owned by the Fox Network Groups under Star India, Star Plus is an entertainment channel equipped with tons of diverse shows. Its programming comprises a variety of shows that appeal to a wide and varied audience base. The list of programs broadcast by Star Plus include a mix of family dramas, comedies, reality shows, crime thrillers and telefilms.

Programs Broadcast by Star Plus

The early 2000s are behind that witnessed the channel broadcasting a plethora of shows like Shararat, Son Pari, Hatim, Akkad Bakkad Bambey Bo, or sitcoms like Khichdi, Tu Tu Main Main, or the infamous drama series like Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kaahin Kisi Roz, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, etc. With time, the list of programs broadcast by Star Plus has shortened by quite a bit. The content of the shows has been condensed and instead of producing more than 10 shows under one category, show runners has opted to produce 1 or 2 programs under each category or genre and has started to value quality over quantity.

Drama Series

In Indian film and television, drama is a genre of narrative fiction or semi-fiction, which is intended to be serious. There are various sub-genres to this like crime-drama, historical period drama, teen drama, comedy-drama also known as dramedy, etc. Out of the list of programmes broadcast by Star Plus, shows like Ishqbaaaz, Mariam Khan-Reporting Live, Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala, which is a musical drama and the mythological period drama Karn Sangini are good examples.

Soap Operas

Indian soap operas are well known for their over dramatized and protracted storylines with their longstanding formula of sympathy, tears, villainy and a melodramatic background score. The majority of these television serials, despite being women-centric, reinforce archaic beliefs about a woman's modesty and her place in the household and in society. These soap operas cater to a wide-ranging audience and possess the ability to influence societal thought processes. Out of the list of programs broadcast by Star Plus, shows like Yeh Hain Mohabbatein, the reboot of the 2001 hit Indian soap-opera Kausautii Zindagii Kay and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hain are prime examples of soap operas telecast on Star Plus.

Supernatural Series

As the name suggests, these shows are seeped with supernatural elements like evil witches or daayans, spirits, ghouls, black magic, cursed dolls and tantrics, etc. Out of the list of programs broadcast by Star Plus, the channel airs two supernatural series, first is Qayamat Ki Raat or the Night of Doom, where a young couple faces their worst nightmares due to a curse by a tantric priest and how they overcome the obstacles and fight evil. And the second is, Nazar, the plot revolves around a young woman named Mohona, who turns into a witch and how her transformation affects her family, mainly her daughter and the spine-chilling events that Mohona faces that turns her life upside down.

Reality Shows

This genre of television programming documents the supposedly unscripted real life situations and often features an otherwise unknown cast of individuals who are typically not professional actors. There is a wide variety of sub-genres under this category, some of which includes the game shows, talk shows; talent hunt shows like Indian Idol or Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, even hidden camera shows like Big Boss, all come under reality television. Currently in 2018, the list of reality shows broadcast in Star Plus is the season 4 of Dance Plus with the previous Dance India Dance stars Dharmesh Yelande, Shakti Mohan and Punit Pathak as the three main judges and Remo D'souza as the super judge. The season 4 of the show premiered on October 6th, 2018. And earlier this year on 13th January, aired the first season of the talent hunt show called India's Next Superstars with judges like Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty. The show concluded on 8th April and the winner of this season was Aman Gandotra.
