The multi-facted personality Priya Tendulkar, the daughter of the noted playwright and litterateur Vijay Tendulkar shot to fame with her cult series `Rajni` which used to be aired on Doordarshan. She made her film debut with the product of the renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal titled `Ankur` in the year 1974. Soon after the success of that Bollywood film she went on to achieve iconic statues among the Indian mass by her portrayal of crusading housewife in `Rajni` who suffered corruption through all levels.
Priya Tendulkar has been successful in proving her versatility in several super hit Hindi flicks like `Itihaas`, `Damini` and `Yug`. Apart from her career in films she had also been successful in carving a special niche for herself in the hearts of the audiences with innumerable serials like `Kisse Miya Biwi Ke`, `Swayamsiddha`, `Kabhi Door Kabhi Paas`, `Mahanagar` and `Hum Paanch`. She had also displayed her immense passion for theater by meting out brilliant performances in `Pygmalion`, `Kanyadaan`, `Sakharam Binder`, `Kamla`, `Anji` and others. She has received many awards not only in the state level but was also awarded on a national level. She also meted out brilliant performances in super hit Marathi flicks `Gondhalat Gondhal`, `Dhakti Jau`, `Tuch Majhi Rani`. She had also composed a book in the Marathi language.
In the era of 1990s her intense passion turned her into a host of highly acclaimed talk shows like `Zimmedar Kaun`, which used to be broadcasted on SAB TV. She was also the host of `The Priya Tendulkar Talk Show`, which was also awarded the Screen Videocon Award for being the Best Talk Show. Very few people are aware of this fact that this bundle of talent was also a writer and has as many as four books to her credit namely `Jyacha Tyacha Prashna` that is a compilation of short stories and also won the `Damini Puraskar`. Then she composed a collection of columns. This composition of hers also went onto win the Sahitya Prishad Puraskar`Panchatarankrit`, the collection of essays also won the Delhi Katha Puraskar Award.
Unfortunately the noted actress and social activist Priya Tendulkar breathed her last in the year 2002 after a cardiac arrest. The actress at that was only 48 years old. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 1999 but had fought back to life, which was very much true to her screen image. Her fan following truly grieve her loss not only in their lives but also in the world of creative talent.
