The citadel was initially known as Muranjan. But later it was renamed after the Maratha army seized the fort during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1458, Prabalgad Fort was occupied by Malik Ahmad who was the Prime Minister of Ahmednagar Kingdom. Prabalgad consists of a sister fort which is named Irshalgad Fort. It is situated in the vicinity of the main fort. Irshalgad is comparatively smaller in area. However there are numedrous water reservoirs that were cut from rock.
