Poovar Beach is situated near the Kovalam Beach that separates the River Neyyar from the sea. It is located at the southern tip of Trivandrum and is the only village that trails the end of Kerala. Poovar is basically a fishing village and the only way to reach Poovar is through water. This beach is known for its pristine and virginal beauty. Due to extensive fishing, beach activities and water sports are not developed. The estuary there is one among the natural wonders where the Lake, River, Sea and Beach meet the land, and is situated adjacent to the Poovar Island; a rare find in Kerala, the southern state of India. It is enveloped by the most serene backwaters and opening out to the Sea and a dream golden beach. Poovar is widely identified for its lovely beaches which serve as a major attraction for tourists.

Poovar offers several possibilities. Cruise to a neighbouring fishing village in 2 minutes. Alter course, and visit a centuries old martial arts village. Kerala is the birthplace of a unique martial art form. The traditional lifestyles here provide the experience of a natural museum. The area is abundant in well-preserved local flora, with several species of spices, exotic flowers, complete with banana and coconut groves. The Poovar beach separates the river from the sea and is quite breathtaking. Due to active fishing, the beach is not used as a sunbathing spot or for swimming as the currents are quite strong. Backwater cruises, in a variety of boats, are a popular way to observe the vibrant birdlife and rural lifestyles here.

Legend of Poovar Beach
Poovar is unspoilt and unexplored, enveloped by the most serene backwaters, and opening out to the sea and a dream golden sand beach. The historical importance of Poovar has its strong ties with the legendary King of the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore, the great Marthanda Varma Maharaja. The legend goes that the place was used as a safeguard from the enemies by Maharaja Marthanda Varma. The Raja experienced at Poovar during his shelter a site of red flowers, chipped out from the Kovala trees standing along the Neyyar riverbanks, floating in the river. It looked like a red carpet on water. It is believed that the stream was named as "Poovar" as the Raja described the river as "poo-aar" which meant a "stream of flowers". The beauty and greenery of the picturesque and unparallel silence of Poovar captured the mind of the Maharaja.

Best Time to Visit Poovar Beach
Poovar is typically tropical with temperature varying between a humid 25 degree Celsius and 36 degree Celsius. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the evenings get cooler. The monsoon hits the coast between June and August, when it is traditionally considered the best time for Ayurvedic treatments.

How to Reach Poovar Beach
Poovar is about 30 km from the city centre. One can take a taxi or auto to the Poovar jetty. Estuary Island is a 15-minute boat ride away.
