His career began in the theatres of Delhi which nurtured his aspirations of pursuing a career in Bollywood. He gained recognition in the film industry through his acclaimed performance in Maqbool in 2003 and Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012.

Early Life of Piyush Mishra
Piyush Mishra was born to Pratap Kumar Sharma on 13th January 1963, in Gwalior. Initially he grew up as Priyakant Sharma, but was later adopted by Taradevi Mishra, his father`s eldest sister, who had no children. He started his schooling in Carmel Convent School, Gwalior but later moved to Gwalior`s JC Mills Higher Secondary School. Since his school days, co curricular activities like acting, painting and singing attracted him more than academics. He was in class 10th when he filed an affidavit in the district court for changing his name to Piyush Mishra. Theatre world greatly appealed to him in his childhood and his talent gained recognition in the institutions like Rangshri Little Ballet Troupe and Kala Mandir. He appeared in the entrance test of National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi in 1983 and joined it afterwards. He completed his graduation from the same institution in 1986. He also got his first opportunity as a music composer in NSD and later also got the chance to improve his acting skills under the direction of a German director, Fritz Bennewitz.

Career of Piyush Mishra
After graduating from NSD, Piyush Mishra began his acting career as a theatre actor. He also helped in the foundation of the theatre group Act One with stage actors Ashish Vidyarthi, Gajraj Rao and Manoj Bajpai. In the subsequent years, he worked as a writer and director of several plays, many of which received critical acclamations. He joined Asmita Theatre Group in 1996 where he performed in his popular show `An Evening with Piyush Mishra`. In 1999 Piyush Mishra also presented his solo act play at Bharat Rang Mahotsav, which is the National School of Drama`s Annual Theatre Festival. Afterwards he moved to Mumbai and became a part of several television shows.

Piyush Mishra made his cinematic debut as an actor with Mani Ratnam`s movie Dil Se in the year 1998. However, even after his Bollywood break, he continued to stay in Delhi and worked for theatres. In 2001 he wrote the dialogues of Rajkumar Santoshi`s film The Legend of Bhagat Singh. His work received critical appreciations and he won the Zee Cine Awards for Best Dialogue in 2003. He finally shifted to Mumbai in 2002 to establish himself as an actor, lyricist and screenwriter. His portrayal of the character of `Kaka` in Vishal Bhardwaj`s movie Maqbool which was an adaptation of Shakespearean novel Macbeth earned him further praises. He also enacted in movies like Gulaal, Rockstar and Gangs of Wasseypur where his talent gained appreciation by the film fraternity. Meanwhile he also continued working as a lyricist, music composer and screenplay and dialogue writer. He has also performed his own composition in MTV Coke Studio, season 2.
