Phensang Monastry is one of the major monasteries which is situated on the gentle slopes that spreads from Kabi to Phodong. This is one of the earliest monasteries in Sikkim which was established in 1721 under the Nyingmapa order. Besides being a place of reverence this also served as the residence of the three monks. The original Phensang Monastery had to face severe accident when the monastery was set on fire. It engulfed almost the entire monastery which took away its original glamour. This was later on renovated with the initiative of the monks who could successfully rebuild it by collecting funds. Finally the renovated structure stood in 1948 which now exhibited modern day architecture.
Besides this the Phensang Monastery is also known for the annual festivals which are celebrated on the 28th and 29th day of the tenth month of the Tibetan calendar. It initiates some sacred monk dances along with the popular mask dance which takes place during the Sikkimese New Year.
Thus with some well connected national highways this monastery is approachable from Gantok, Kolkata, Siliguri, Dargeeling and Kalingpong. With its colourful architecture and traditional background this has been equally popular among the tourist who visits Sikkim.
