Phawngpui Mountain Peak which is also known as the `blue mountain peak` is one of the most revered mountain peaks of Mizoram state of India. Phawngpui Mountain Peak is 2157 metres high and located near the Myanmar border in Lawngtlai District. Phawngpui Peak displays the most captivating view of Mizoram. The Peak is home to orchids, rhododendrons, shrubs, herbs, vegetation etc. Every year, people form different parts of the world visit this peak to enjoy its beauty.
Etymology of Phawngpui Mountain Peak
The term `Phawngpui` is derived from Lai language. Phong means "grassland" or "meadow", and pui means "great".
Attractions of Phawngpui Mountain Peak
Mainly known for the various types of orchids and rhododendrons, this mountain peak also has great collection of rare trees, shrubs and herbs which cover the slopes of the mountain. As the mountain is covered with different types of herbs, it looks blue from a distance. Thus, the hill is often known as Blue Mountains. Phawngpui Mountain Peak in Mizoram is also known for the semi- circular cliff in the western part of the peak which is known as Thlazuang Kham. This is sharp, deep and beautiful which often attracts the tourists from all over the world. It is one of the revered peaks of Mizoram which is believed to be the abode of gods who reside in the mountain peak. While some also believe that the place is also haunted by spirits. Covered with wide variety of vegetation, the peak is one of the most attractive sites in Mizoram. It has a huge collection of bamboo groves and other alluring vegetations which are visited by different types of butterflies which are equally attractive.
Conservation of Phawngpui Mountain Peak
Since the year 1992, it has been included in the protected area of the Phawngpui National Park. The Government of Mizoram gives permission to visit the mountain only from November to April.
Connectivity of Phawngpui Mountain Peak
Phawngpui Mountain Peak includes some of the most attractive journeys. One can reach the place through airways from the nearest airport at Aizawl which is further connected with the major cities like Kolkata and Imphal. The place is also connected with Guwahati and some of the nearest villages like Sangau which is located at a distance of 229 kms from Aizawal. It also has well connected railway which connects the place with Silchar in Assam, Guwahati and Tripura. This place is connected with the national highway NH - 54 which connects Aizawl with rest of the country. It also has night services from Shillong, and Guwahati.
