Periyar University is named after a social reformer Thanthai Periyar. The University Grants Commissions bestowed the 2f status in 1998 and 12(B) status in 2005 to the university. It is accredited with NAAC.
Periyar University was established in 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It started with the three departments of Commerce, Geology and Mathematics of the postgraduate extension centres of Madras University, functioning at Salem at that time.
