Pazhoor Kunjan Marar was born in 1901 to a family of hereditary Mutiyettu performers in Kerala. He trained under his uncle, Kunju Marar. When he was 20, the Siva temple in Parur in Ernakulam district employed him as Sopanam singer.

Soon he became leader of the Mutiyettu group participating in rituals at around fifty temples across Kerala. Pazhoor Kunjan Marar also presented the form outside temple precincts for the first time. Through his untiring enterprise, it managed to survive and continue. He insisted that the next generation, his sons and nephews, take up and practise Mutiyettu instead of joining easier vocations.
