Early life of Payal Jain
Her birthplace has been New Delhi and later she graduated summa-cum-laude in 1993 from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, California. Payal`s voyage in the topsy turvy globe of couture marks a humble initiation from the by-lanes of Delhi. Her childhood days were steeped in art, culture and music. She graduated summa-cum-laude in 1993 from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, California and returned home to start a career in fashion. She ventured back to India at a time when the fashion industry was in its infancy and there was no organized retail. The struggles of the initial years are still amongst her fondest memories. She has come a long way since then to be recognized as one of the leading designer in the country.

Career of Payal Jain
Jain had started her journey in the fashion fair as she first worked as a design assistant in some of the prestigious European fashion houses Fritzi, San Francisco and later worked with leading couturiers Jacqueline De Brey in San Francisco and Ulrich Engler in London. Her retreat to India had been solely for work. She designed corporate dressing for The Leela, Goa in 1993. She even designed for over 40 hotels. Her participation had been notable in some major international fashion shows including Toronto. She even wrote a book called Fashion Studies for aspiring young designers. This educational reference book specifically designed for X1 standard students for the CBSE curriculum is a synthesis of her experiences and endeavours in this field. Her journey continues as she is always ready to explore new avenues while creating a label which makes truly world class garments.

She works with craftsmen in tiny villages across Rajasthan, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Bihar to integrate their designs in the mainstream. She works with indigenous material like silk, brocades, zardosi and chikankari, and gets inspiration from Mughals and other royal eras. Elegant cocktail dresses, columnar evening gowns and simple yet immaculate casuals grace the racks of her atelier. Other than the pret-a-porter collections, Payal also does Haute Couture for her discerning clients to complement their individual personalities.

Contemporary fashion design in a corporate environment is all about creating synergies and having an innate understanding of design which works practically. Her vast international clientele are a testimony to the quality of her work and style, to name a few hospitality groups such as Hyatt, Four Seasons, Shangrila, Aman Resorts, Leela, Radisson etc.

A singular feature of her atelier is the seamless integration of design and production processes with the revival of traditional crafts being a leitmotif. In an attempt to revive age-old Indian printing techniques, the studio makes a constant endeavour to use fabrics, which are manually printed with natural vegetable dyes in remote villages. Strength of the studio is hand embroidery where traditional motifs and techniques are continuously re-interpreted to suit contemporary fashion trends.

In the past, Payal Jain has utilized her creative abilities for various social causes, be it the raising of funds for worthy charities, working for co-operatives or bringing about social awareness. She has been behind several fundraiser shows for organisations such as `Tamana Special School` in Delhi `Vatsalya` for street children in Mumbai and `Prayas Foundation for integrated learning` for slum children in Delhi.

With a constant endeavour to take up new challenges she has successfully designed ensembles appropriate for children with disabilities and people with special needs. She has also held several solo shows in Delhi, Mumbai & Bangalore and also been a part of India Fashion Week in 2001. Her collections are displayed in her studio and Ensemble in Delhi, Ensemble in Mumbai, and Folio & Cinnamon in Bangalore. Payal Jain is indeed a designer with a difference.
