Pattumala is a fascinating place that lies in the Idukki district. The lofty peaks, the little streams and the green expanse of the tea plantations give the hills an ethereal beauty. The region is completely made up of hills and the topography makes it an ideal place for engaging in various outdoor activities. The regions surrounding Pattumala has a phenomenal beauty and this is a must see town when you are visiting the state of Kerala.

The town and its surrounding areas are known for tea plantations being home to two of the biggest names in the tea production sector - Harrisons Malayalam and A V Thomas & Co. One can visit flower garden and the Velankanni Matha Church built at the top off the hill. Velankanni Matha Church is a famous pilgrim centre, which is built entirely of granite. The flower garden nearby is fascinating riot of colours, of roses, orchids and anthuria. This place is 85 kilometers away from Kottayam town and 30 km to the famous tourist center Thekkady.

Etymology of Pattumala
Pattumala means silky mountain. Silk worms were also grown by Europeans in this place hence the name silky mountains. It is surrounded by big and small hills with evergreen tea gardens.

Accommodation facilities are not too much in the area but you can opt for nearby resorts and guest houses. Pattumala Hills are located about 17 km east of Peermede and 27 km west of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkady.

Velankanni Matha Church: This church is a Roman Catholic Church that is dedicated to the Our Lady of Good Health. This church is built fully with granite and is a Marian pilgrim centre also. It appears as a huge castle located on hill top surrounded by tea plantations that enhances its beauty.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: It is located 27km from Pattumala. Periyar National Park and wildlife Sanctuary is located in district of Idukki and Tathanmthitta in Kerala. It is famous for its tiger and elephant reserves. It is often called as Periyar wildlife Sanctuary. It is located in the hills of Cardamom and Pandalam of southern Western Ghats along the Tamil Nadu border.

How to Reach Pattumala
Pattumala is very well connected to the outside world via different modes. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, which is around 150 km away from the hill resort. The best time to visit Pattumala is between the months of September to May. The closest Railway Station is Kottayam Railway Station.
