Patalpuri Temple, AllahabadPatalpuri Temple, which happens to be one of the most holy places in Allahabad, was built in the Vedic period in Allahabad Fort, Uttar Pradesh. The immortal Banyan tree, called Akshaya Vat, was also laid within this underground temple. Patalpuri temple and the Undying Banyan Tree are both situated in close proximity with each other on the same site.

Patalpuri temple is regarded as one of the oldest temples not only in Allahabad but in all over India as well. During the reign of Akbar, the emperor built the Allahabad Fort over the temple in the year 1583 and since then the temple lies within and under the fort. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama and Prahalada had also come to visit this old temple.

The immortal Banyan Tree, Akshaya Vat, is often regarded as the holy tree. About this Undying Banyan Tree, it is said that this tree would stand firm even when the entire world would get destroyed. According to the mythologists, once the sage Markandeya asked Lord Vishnu to show him an instance of the power of almighty God. Lord Vishnu flooded the whole world for a while, during which only the Akshayavat or the immortal Banyan tree could be noticed above the water level. The tree stands in a deep niche above an underground pit, which is said to lead to the Triveni. It can often be heard that people in the old days used to throw themselves from the Undying Banyan Tree to attain salvation.
