Parashuram Kund Mela is an annual religious fair which is celebrated near Parashuram Kund. It is situated at a distance of nearly 13 miles from the north-eastern portion of Tezu, which is the district headquarters of the district of Lohit, Arunachal Pradesh. Thousands of devotees from all across the country take the holy dip at Parashuram Kund at Wakro, Lohit district.
Legends of Parashuram Kund Mela
According to a legendary tale, Parashurama, on the orders of his father Jamadagni, had beheaded his mother Renuka with his axe. However, he immediately released that the axe stuck to his hand, as a reminder of his sin for his matricide. Finally as per the Puranas, he approached the Brahma Kund, which is located in the Lohit district in the north-eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and took a dip in its sacred water to purify himself off his sins of matricide. Following his holy dip, the axe dropped from his hand, signifying that his sins were washed off from him.
Celebration of Parashuram Kund Mela
Every year on Makar Sankranti , thousands of pilgrims from across the country, despite the severe cold come to Parashuram Kund to take a sanctified bathe with the belief that it will lead to emancipation. At midnight, the fortunate ceremony of Makar Sankranti begins and devotees start bathing in the Kund. Saints offer their prayers during this mela and stay near the kund for two nights, singing some devotional songs. This fair is arranged on the banks of Lohit River.
Despite the absence of decent accommodation, the devotees and `sadhus` or saints assembled here spend the two nights around the Kund. In order to encourage the pilgrimage, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh arranges for all sorts of assistance. The pilgrims are also provided with food for free of cost in Langars and mess are put up by philanthropists.
