The ecological refuge of Pania Wildlife Sanctuary is also known by the name of "Chanchai-Pania" has been a home to varied species of rare and endangered animals. In the year 1989, Pania was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Spread over an area of 39.63 square km, the Pania Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Amreli district in the state of Gujarat. There are lions, leopards and other animals which are a part of the Gir National Park ,roam around freely in the Pania Wildlife Sanctuary. Before Pania"s declaration as a sanctuary in the year 1989, it was Chanchai and Pania forest classified broadly as Jagiri Forest.
The ample supply of fodder makes the Pania Wildlife Sanctuary at Amreli a coveted abode dedicated to the Indian Chinkara. The chinkara belongs to a species of gazelle, abundantly spotted in South Asia. Although this wildlife sanctuary possesses luscious grasslands of diverse varieties but the insufficient supply of water can be considered as a major drawback.
Flora and Fauna of Pania Wildlife Sanctuary
Other than chinkaras, there is an abundance of fauna which include lion, leopard, and blue bull, along with civet cat, hyena, spotted deer, peafowl, python, four horned antelope, pangolin, porcupine, fox and wild boar.
Besides, the various wild beasts, this ecological haven also consists of a large variety of trees, plants and several species of grass. Trees like bamboo, modad, saladi, desi baval, khair, gorad, karmada, hermo, bordi, dudhlo are some of the innumerable species of flora existent in the Pania Wildlife Sanctuary.
Visiting Information on Pania Wildlife Sanctuary
The best time to visit this wildlife sanctuary is between the months of October to June. The nearest airport is at Rajkot at a distance of about 150 km. The Visavadar railway station is the closest at a fair distance of about 10 km.
