Pampadum Shola National Park, KeralaPampadum Shola National Park, located in the eastern part of Southern Ghats of Kerala, is one of the famous parks in the state. The park is situated about 35 km away from Munnar Town, on the way to Vattavada in Devikulam Taluk of Idukki District. The Government of Kerala declared it as a National Park in December 2004. The Pampadum Shola National Park is spread over 11.753 sq. kms and is the smallest National Park in the state.

Climate of Pampadum Shoal National Park
Pampadum Shoal National Park is blessed with a pleasant climate. It enjoys misty and cloudy climate throughout the year. The sanctuary experiences pleasant climate during the months of April to September. The coldest moths here are December and January. The temperature varies with a minimum of 6degreeC (December) to a maximum of 30degreeC (April). There are 4-5 dry months spanning between December and March. Pampadum Shola Forests receive heavy rain during the North-East monsoon also. The terrain is undulating with hillocks of varying heights. The altitudes range between 1600-2400 m. The forest is seen as a continuous patch from 1600 m up to 2000 m, above which grasslands prevails with small forest patches distributed among them.

Flora and Fauna of Pampadum Shola National Park
The National Park has a variety of flora and fauna. There are 22 Species of trees, 74 species of herbs and shrubs and16 species of climbers. The rugged terrain of Pampadu Shola National Park is covered with West coast tropical evergreen, Southern Hilltop Tropical Vegetation found at higher altitudes, West coastal Semi-green at elevation of 100-150m, Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous comprising 60% of the vegetation. The park also has Myristica swamp forest, sub-montane hill valley swamp forest etc.

The sanctuary also provides shelter to many endangered and threatened species of animals like Elephant, Leopard, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Barking deer, Wild dog, Common Langur etc. there are almost 9 species of mammals, 14 sp. of birds, 93 species of moths and 100 species of butterflies. The sanctuary is also home to a wide variety of birds like Blue Rock-thrush, Blue-capped Rock-thrush, Cormorants, Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, Egrets, Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Black-and-orange Flycatchers, Nilgiri flycatcher, Darters, White-bellied Shortwing and Pied kingfisher. Many reptiles like King Cobra and Pythons are also found here. There are Ecotourism facilities in the park which include trekking and night camping.
