Palitana is the only town that has more than 900 temples that basically belongs to Jain community. The temples of Jain Community found in this city are exquisitely marble carved and appear as ivory miniatures when seen from a distance. In Palitana, thousands of pilgrims come to offer prayers to the Lord Parshavanath and Lord Neminath. The local residents of Palitana often speak Gujarati Language and Hindi Language. The religions of inhabitants are Hindus and Jains.

History of Palitana
Palitana came into existence in the early medieval times. In the year 1194, Palitana was founded as a princely state of Saurashtra district of Gujarat. This city Palitana covers an area of about 777 square kilometers and consists of around 58000 inhabitants. In year of 1656, Murud Baksh the son of Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor granted the Palitana village to the most important Jain merchant known as Shantidas Jhaveri. In year of 1730 the Jain temples of Palitana were managed by the Anandji Kalyanji trust. Also initially it was found that Palitana was the native state of India in the Kathiawar Agency of Bombay Presidency during the rule of British East India Company and the British Government. Later, on 15th February 1948, this city became independent and falls under as the region of Gujarat state of India.

Palitana enjoys soothing and temperate weather through out the year. The summer days are found humid, hot and dry whereas the night temperature becomes mild cold. This city basically inhabits three types of environment such as summer, winter and monsoons. Palitana also enjoys heavy rainfall. The heavy downpour makes this region moist and humid. The winter months are from October to March. Winter season is considered as the ideal season for visiting this region.

Palitana is the Jain pilgrimage centre of Gujarat. Palitana has numerous temples small and big on the two summits. Tourists visiting Palitana can spend peaceful times along with can worship their deities too. The Jain Tirthankars of early age attained "nirvana" on Shtrunjay Hill. From that time, place is recognized as Siddhakshetra where one can attain "moksh" or "mukti". There are other temples in Palitana. Some of the temples are Kumarpal Temple, Adinath Temple, Samprati Raja Temple and Vimalshah Temple. These all are also worshipped widely by the devotees. Besides Jain temples of Palitana, there are the Hindu temples of Lord Shiva, Lord Hunaman and Goddess Saraswati.

Visiting Information
Palitana is easily accessible through railways and road ways. Palitana, the city of Jain temple complexes has an airport that lays 51kms far and resides in Bhavnagar district. Ahmedabad city is situated at a distance of 215kms and one can reach Palitana by road. There are various buses run all day long from Bhavnagar to Palitana. Even passengers can travel from regular buses that travel daily from Una, Talaja, Diu and Ahmedabad. It takes approximately six hours to reach Palitana city when travelling from Diu or Una.
