Om Parvat is an ancient sacred Hindu mountain which lies in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, which is located near the Sinla pass.
This peak is vary famous and is known by a variety of names like Adi Kailash, little Kailash, Jonglingkong peak, Baba Kailash and Chhota Kailash. Om Parvat is somewhat similar to the Mount Kailash in Tibet. The peak was first climbed by an Indo-British team including Martin Moran, T. Rankin, M. Singh, S. Ward, A. Williams and R. Ausden. However, the mountaineers did not climb the final 10 metres out of respect for the peak"s holy significance.
Etymology of Om Parvat
It is so called because the snow accumulation gives the appearance of the Hindu sacred syllable `aum` written on it. OM is a holy Hindu mantra which can be clearly seen on this mountain. During the months of August and September the dot on the semi circle of the mantra can also be observed.
Attractions of Om Parvat
The beauty of Om Parvat and its surrounding is a treat to the eyes. The most excellent view of Om Parvat can be enjoyed from the district of Pithoragarh which faces the mountain and hence to the "Om". In the vicinity of the Om Parvat lie the beautiful Parvati Lake and the Jonglingkong Lake. The Jonglingkong Lake is as sacrosanct as the Mansarovar for the Hindus. Adjacent to the Om Parvat lies the mountain peak called Parwati Muhar where the snow glitters like a crown in the sun.
