Okram Ibobi Singh is the present Chief Minister of the state of Manipur and belongs to the Indian National Congress party. He is holding this position since March 7th 2002. He was born on 19th July 1948 to Okram Angoubi and Lukamani Devi at Thoubal Athokpam. He is the 2nd person from Thoubal district to become the chief minister of Nagaland. He had completed his graduation in Arts. Apart from being a politician, Okram Ibobi Singh is a social worker by profession.
Political Career of Okram Ibobi Singh
Ibobi Singh started his political career in 1984-85. He contested as an Independent candidate in Khangabok Assembly constituency. He won the election and consequently joined Congress. Thereafter he was appointed as the Chairman of the Manipur State Khadi and Village Industries Board till 1988. During the tenure of RK Jaychandra ministry, Ibobi was the secretary of the Congress Legislative Party. In the General Elections of 1990, Ibobi Singh was re-elected from the constituency on Congress ticket. For the 1st time, in the Congress led by R.K Dorendro, Okram Ibobi Singh was inducted as Minister-in-Charge of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development. In the Rishang Keishing ministry, he was also Minister-in-charge of Industries for the period of 1994-95.
In 1995-96 he became the vice president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. On December 10, 1999, when he was appointed as the president of MPCC (I) the new Chief Minister`s political career took its off stages. He was again re-elected to the post, which he holds till now. In 2012, he won the state election for the third time. His party won 42 out of the total 60 assembly seats.
On 2nd September, 2008, insurgents in Manipur attacked Okram Ibobi Singh`s residence with rocket launchers as he and his family were sleeping inside. One of the security guards was injured in the attack but Singh and his family were safe and unharmed.
Personal Life of Okram Ibobi Singh
Okram Ibobi Singh is married to Landhoni Devi and the couple has one son and two daughters. Singh has established Schools, Clubs and Co-operative Societies in the Rural Areas. He has also served as the Secretary of South Eastern Transport Co-operative Society Ltd., Thoubal.
Okram Ibobi Singh has also served as the Secretaries of Athokpam High School and Madhya Junior High School respectively.
