Jadavpur University has been identified as one of the top universities in the country with "Potential for Excellence" by UGC. The National Institutional Ranking Framework has ranked it 14th among engineering institutes in India in 2019, 13th overall and 6th among all universities. Jadavpur University achieved complete academic autonomy status from the UGC in 2018. It was established in 1906 by the name of Bengal Technical Institute. After independence, the institute was converted into a university on 24th of December in 1955. Alumni of Jadavpur University are known as `Jadavpurians`.
