On 1st October, 2002 the North Western Railway came into being. There are four divisions for this zone of Indian Railways: Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer and Bikaner. Jaipur is the headquarters for North Western Railway. The Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions were originally part of the Western Railway while Bikaner and Jodhpur belonged to the Northern Railway. Besides the passenger trains there are several ferry trains running along these tracks. Passengers primarily avail the services from the Jaipur division. The trains plying from here connect Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana with Rajasthan.
Computerised Reservation Systems are available for the convenience of the travellers. The stations of North Western Railway provide number facilities to the passengers, like, waiting rooms, catering services and others. Online reservation facilities are also offered to the travellers. Besides the regular trains there several special trains, such as, Tatkal trains, Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Royal Orient Trains, Shiwalik Palace, Place on Wheels and several others are available.
Places like Ajmer, Udaipur, Dwarka, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Junagarh, Varanasi, Haridwar and several other important cities are connected by trains plying in the North Western Railway zone.
