Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is the first of its kind in the north-east region, in India. UNESCO added this National park to its list of Biosphere Reserves in May 2009.

Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, MeghalayaNokrek Biosphere Reserve is located in the Garo Hills district that is only 2 kms away from Tura Peak. Situated in the state of Meghalaya, the reserve is considered to be one of the least disturbed forest tracts of the sub-Himalayan ranges. It is also the first biosphere reserve of its kind in the north-east region and is counted amongst the top biosphere reserves of India. Nokrek hill is the highest peak of Garo Hills. UNESCO added this National park to its list of Biosphere Reserves in May 2009. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is extremely popular for activities such as camping, bird watching and observing different animals in their natural habitats.

Geography of Nokrek Biosphere Reserve
The entire area of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is hilly and the main rocks include gneisses, granulites, migmatites, amphibolites and the banded iron formation that is intruded by basic and ultra-basic bodies. In most parts of the Biosphere Reserve, the soil is red loam, however, sometimes the soil varies from clayey to sandy loam. Though, the soils are rich in organic matter and nitrogen, they are deficient in phosphate and potash. The area also consists of patchy sedimentary rock that comprises pebble bed, sand stone and carbonaceous shale.

Flora and Fauna in Nokrek Biosphere Reserve
The Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is home to a great variety of flora and fauna species and for this reason, it witnesses a large number of visitors visiting it, every year. Nokrek hill is the home of a very rare species of citrus locally known as "Memang Narang" meaning "Orange of the Spirits". It is considered to be the most primitive and progenitor of all other varieties of citrus plants in the world. There are rare species of orchids like white meranti, wild lemon, lali, chempaka and grand rasamala which are found in the reserve.

The diversity of the animal species in this reserve includes the mammals, reptiles, avifauna and invertebrate groups. Apart from that, the reserve is also home to a wide variety of fauna. Some of the most notable animal species found in the reserve include the Fishing Cat, the Serow and Tiger. One can also see a variety of rare, endangered and endemic species of animals here. Some of them are the Hoolock Gibbon, Pig Tailed Macaque, Himalayan Black Bear, Elephant and Giant Flying Squirrel.

The best way to reach the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve would be by taking a tourist bus either from Shillong or from Tura.
