It is located almost 200 km away from Hyderabad and also close to the border of Maharashtra state. The fort was built the rulers of Rashtraputha dynasty during the 10th century AD. It was constructed atop a hillock located towards the south west of the town. The Rashtraputha kings ruled over the entire region during that period. Nizamabad Fort is almost 300 m high. It is among the most significant structures in Andhra Pradesh.

The fort was occupied by several rulers from different dynasties. Throughout its existence, the fort was modified a number of times along with additions in fortification. The fortress includes various religious sites and other buildings which are located in the vicinity. One of the most popular temples in the citadel is a temple of Lord Rama. It was constructed by the renowned Maratha Emperor Chatrapati Shivaji. The Rama temple consists of mahamundapas, mundapas and huge corridors. The fort also consists of numerous valuable sculptures and relics.
