Nihali Language is spoken in West and Central India, in the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Nihali Language, Indo Aryan LanguageNihali Language is also known as Nahali or as Kalto. It is an Indo Aryan Language of India. The area where this language is spoken lies to the south of Tapti River in the Nimar district of Madhya Pradesh. This language consists of words that have been adopted from neighbouring languages. 60-70% has been taken from Korku rest from Dravidian languages and from Marathi.

The Nihali have lived in a symbiotic but socially inferior relationship with the Korku people. They are bilingual in Korku, with Nihali spoken to prevent the Korku from understanding them.

The history of Nihalis reveals a massacre that was organized by one of the rulers in the area in the early nineteenth century. Since then, Nihali group has come down in size. The group has been multilingual and uses Nihali as a secret language which is not revealed to outsiders.
