Nehru Science Center, Mumbai, was initially visualized as the magnificent Museum of Science and Technology during the late 1960s. However, in 1977, a little change was noticed in the goals, set for the museum. It emerged as the nucleus of the optimal scientific-enterprises of the country. The prime objective was to attain a standard of excellence, at par with the level of international institutions.
The center inaugurated its first semi-permanent demonstration, entitled `Light &Sight` in 1977. This phenomenal development found its befitting sequel in the world`s first ever Science Park, established in 1979, on the occasion of the International Year of the child.
Ultimately, on November 11, 1985, the science-center, was ready to be attended by the public on November 11, 1985. Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the ex-Prime Minister of India, took the initiative.
Nehru Science Centre, the largest Science Centre in the country, contains a massive and educative science park, stretching over a huge 8 acres. The Science Park is invested with a wide diversity of plants, trees and shrubs.
The science park provides the visitors the remarkable opportunity to conduct experiments on the display items, like, press levers, turn wheels, roll balls, pull strings and distant vision-favouring periscopes and telescopes. The Nehru Center, rejects the wrong notion of science as mere theories. Above 50 direct participatory programmes, science- discourses and demonstrations on energy,sound, kinematics, mechanics, transport, etc. exist in the science park.

The hexagonally- shaped gallery, Science for Children, is endowed with a repository of expositions . Children can indulge in play with soap bubbles, primary colours, geometrical moulds, tough puzzles . Sound and Hearing and Light and Sight are designed galleries, contrived to illustrate the mechanism of sound-production, and sound-hearing, the meaning of resonance, echo, musical notes, the properties of Light and colour, utility and application of lenses, complexity of the human eye and other relevant topics.
