The most common causes of age related eye disorders and visual impairment in the elderly are presbyopia, cataracts, age related macular degeneration, primary open angle glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Nutrition for Eye Diseases
A diet rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc can prevent these diseases. However, a good diet alone does not lead to good eye health, and it is subjected to overall well being and a good lifestyle. Food items essential for maintaining good eye health:

1. Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamin C and therefore are important for health of eyes. Oranges, Strawberries, Grapefruit, Papaya, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Spinach, Broccoli, Peaches and Carrots.
2. Dark-leafy vegetables and Yellow fruits: Dark-leafy vegetables are good source of Beta-carotene. These are also source of lutein and zeaxanthin. Orange and yellow colored fruits and vegetables are also rich in Beta-Carotene.
3. Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Eggs, Peanuts: Vitamin E can be obtained through almonds, peanuts, eggs and sunflower seeds. Vitamin E is essential for the health of retina and blood vessels.
4. Garlic and Turmeric: Antioxidants in garlic are useful in preventing cataracts. Turmeric contains Curcumin antioxidant which has been found to prevent cataracts.
5. Green Tea: It contains antioxidants which protect body from free-radicals that are responsible for many health conditions including cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Regular Care for Eyes
Stimulate the eye muscles by filling the mouth with water; close the eyes and splash cold water onto the eyes. It stimulates the muscles of the eyes, due to the pressure exerted by the water filled in the mouth. Eye exercise improves circulation around the eyes helping them bounce back from the fatigue of constantly looking at a computer screen. Give eyes some rest. Sound sleep is very essential.
