The state of Himachal Pradesh is located in the northern part of India. This state has convoluted topography of interlocking mountain chains, snowy peaks, plunging river valleys and lakes. Such a geographical terrain has beautified Himachal Pradesh. It also provides opportunity for trekking, rafting, paragliding and skiing, thereby drawing tourists to this state. Himachal Pradesh also has a number of national parks. They provide support to faunal and floral population of the state.
Great Himalayan National Park
Great Himalayan National Park is located in the Kullu region at an altitude between 1500 and 6000 m. It was established in 1984. It is spread over an area of about 1,171 square kilometers. The Great Himalayan National Park was added to the UNESCO"s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) list of World Heritage Sites in June, 2014. This national park serves as a home to more than 375 faunal species, including approximately 31 mammals, 181 birds, 3 reptiles, 9 amphibians, 11 annelids, 17 mollusks and 127 insects. Their protection follows the guidelines of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
Pin Valley National Park
Pin Valley National Park is located within the Lahaul and Spiti district. More specifically, it is situated in the desert habitat of the Spiti Valley, within the Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve. It was established in the year 1987. Its altitude ranges from about 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) near Ka Dogri to more than 6,000 meters (20,000 ft) at its highest point. This park serves as a home to a number of endangered animals. About 22 rare and endangered medicinal plant species have been found in and around this national park.
Khirganga National Park
Located in Himachal Pradesh, Khirganga National Park was notified in the year 2010. It is spread over an area of about 710 square kilometers (270 sq mi).
Inderkilla National Park
Inderkilla National Park in Himachal Pradesh was established in the year 2010. It occupies an area of about 104 square kilometers (40 sq mi).
Simbalbara National Park
Simbalbara National Park in Himachal Pradesh was established in the year 2010. It is spread over an area of about 27.88 square kilometers (10.76 sq mi).
