Nathpa Jhakri Dam is a concrete gravity dam constructed on the Sutlej River in Kinnaur and Shimla districts of Himachal Pradesh. The project includes a 60.5 meter high dam, underground desilting complex and a 27 MW Francis unit. The initial purpose of this dam is the production of hydroelectric power and it supplies 1,500 megawatts underground power station with water. The water is redirected through a headrace channel of 27.4 km before it reaches the power station. The dam supplies for Himachal Pradesh and northern regional grid states of India. The power from the Nathpa Jhakri hydro station gets transported to grid system of Haryana by a high voltage transmission system. Nathpa Dam project was started in 1993 and got completed in 2004. Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam sponsored the project.
