Narayan Dutt Tiwari, an Indian politician ,was elected as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in three terms and also the Governor of Andra Pradesh but resigned.

Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Indian PoliticianNarayan Dutt Tiwari is an Indian politician and was the Governor of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh during 2007-2009. He was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for 3 times and the chief Minister of Uttarakhand during 2002-2007. He is a member of Indian National Congress. Narayan Dutt Tiwari was also appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, from 2007, but he had to resign after being entangled in a controversy in 2009.

Early Life of Narayan Dutt Tiwari
Narayan Dutt Tiwari was born on 18th October 1925 in the village of Baluti, in Nainital. His father was Poorn Anand Tiwari, an officer in the forest department. Tiwari`s father has however later resigned and joined the Non-cooperation movement. Tiwari completed his education from several schools like C.R.S.T. High School, E.M. High School and M.B. School.

He was introduced into politics he got arrested during the Indian Independence movement. Tiwari had accused of writing Anti-British leaflets in opposition of the imperialist policies. He was thus arrested on December 14, 1942 and sent to jail in Nainital jail, where his father was already imprisoned.

Later he was released from jail after 15 months in 1944 and then he took admission in Allahabad University. Narayan Dutt Tiwari got the first division in MA (Political Science) and also topped the university. He again, thereafter, secured a first division in the LLB examination.

Career of Narayan Dutt Tiwari
Narayan Dutt Tiwari started his career in politics during his student days and he was selected as the President of the Allahabad University Students Union. Narayan Dutt Tiwari joined the socialist movement in 1946 under the guidance of Acharya Narendra Dev, Jaya Prakash Narayan and Dr. Rammanohar Lohia. In the first general election of India, 1952 he became the youngest MLA of U.P. Assembly. Later he joined the Congress Party and became the member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Later, he joined the Congress Socialist party. He became Secretary in the All India Students Congress, from 1945-1949. He was elected MLA for the first time in the year 1952, when elections were first held in Independent India, from Nainital constituency on the Praja Samajwadi Party ticket.

In the 1957 elections, Tiwari was chosen as the leader of the opposition. He was appointed President of the UP Assembly Public Accounts Committee in 1960. In 1962, he was selected the Secretary of the State Co-operative Federation and Director, Land Development Bank. He was assigned the Vice-President of the Estimates Parishad. In the post he remained for 4 years starting from 1965.

Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Indian Politician In the year 1965 Narayan Dutt Tiwari was also appointed as the All India Coordinator of the National Youth Congress. He established the Jawahar Lal Youth Centre in 1967 and in 1968 he was nominated as the leader of the delegation to the World Youth Assembly, which was held in Japan. In 1965 for the first time, he was elected an MLA on the Congress ticket from the Kashipur constituency. Again in 1970, he was appointed the Minister for Finance and Parliamentary Affairs in the Chaudhary Charan Singh government. Kamlapati Tripathi, thereafter, became the Chief Minister and appointed Tiwari as the Minister with multiple portfolios of Finance, Industry, Irrigation, Excise, Electricity and Labour and Sugarcane development.

Tiwari was re-elected in 1974, from the Kashipur constituency and in 1975; again he was handed with the portfolios of Finance, Industry, Sugar, Sugarcane Development, Excise and Labour, as Cabinet Minister. Under his Chief Minister ship Uttar Pradesh developed immensely in the road and bridge network and the network expanded significantly.

In September 1985, Narayan Dutt Tiwari was appointed the Central Cabinet as the Industry Minister. He was also given the additional portfolio in 1986 as Petroleum Minister. Following this in October 1986, he was allotted Foreign Minister. He replaced Vishwanath Pratap Singh, in April 1987, as leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha. He was appointed in July 1987, as Finance and Commerce Minister in the Central Cabinet. In 1996 and again in 1999, Narayan Dutt Tiwari was elected as MP from the Nainital constituency on the Congress ticket and merged the Tiwari Congress with the parent body. In the early 1990s, he was a competitor to be the Prime Minister of India but lost to late P.V Narasimha Rao. Tiwari later resigned from Congress and in 1995 formed his own All India Indira Congress along with senior Congress leader, Arjun Singh. He however, again joined Congress when Sonia Gandhi rose to power. Tiwari was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996, and again to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999.

He later served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, which was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, from 2002 through 2007. On August 19, 2007, Tiwari was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. But in the year 2009, he became involved in a sex scandal and was compelled by the general public to resign.

Personal life of Narayan Dutt Tiwari
On May 10, 1954 he married Dr Sushila Sanwal.He left for the United States for treatment of his wife, Dr. Sushila on 27 April, 1993 and on 16 May, 1993 she was died at Long Island Hillside Medical Centre, New York, after a protracted illness.
