The state of Nagaland is located in the far north eastern part of India. This state is mostly mountainous except the areas bordering Assam valley. The sheer natural beauty, rich heritage and ancient roots of the capital of Nagaland namely, Kohima is known to draw a number of tourists. Apart from the natural beauty of Kohima, the museums of this state have also added value to the tourism of this state. The two museums located in Kohima are the Nagaland State Museum and the Kohima Museum.
Nagaland State Museum
Nagaland State Museum serves as a home to a rare collection of articles belonging to the different tribes of Nagaland. More specifically, this museum exhibits traditional dresses, jewelleries, statues, pillars, carved gateposts, inscriptions, ancestral weapons, ceremonial drum, musical instruments, Naga Morung (also known as hut models), sculptures of birds and animals etc. These exhibits will intimate the visitors with the lifestyle of the tribes of Nagaland. The basement of the museum houses several animals and birds found only in the north eastern hill states.
Kohima Museum
Kohima Museum is also bedecked with a variety of objects of great antiquity representative of the diverse lifestyle, habitat and culture of the tribal population of Nagaland. More specifically, this museum holds hut models, colourful traditional clothes, musical instruments made from buffalo horns and bamboo, clan motifs, precious stones (carnelian, tourmaline and coral) etc. Other such items are farm implements, gadgets for kitchen, beer mugs, carnelian, tourmaline and coral. This museum also provides an opportunity to its visitors to study Nagamese, which is a pidgin language invented by the Nagas.
