Murlen National Park, in Mizoram, is known to be one of the densest forests of India which allows the minimal penetration of sunlight. The place is also famed for hosting numerous varieties of vibrant Orchids.

Murlen National Park, Champhai District, MizoramMurlen National Park is situated in the Champhai district of the Indian state Mizoram. Spanning over an area of 200 square kilometres, it is precisely located at a distance of 245 kilometres from Aizwal, towards its east, near the Chin Hills. It is the home to a rich variety of sub montane, semi-evergreen and tropical forests which hosts a great diversity of flora and fauna. Murlen National Park shelters 150 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 35 species of medicinal plants and various species of orchids and bamboos. A few people are also involved in the extensive conservation work of Murlen National Park. Murlen National Park is spread in the Murlen Village, which is known to be the village of the chief of Hnahlan, Saithuama Sailo. The village is in turn a part of Hnahlan Village. It was declared as a national park in the year 1991.

Flora of Murlen National Park
Murlen National Park is a dense forested region which allows only 1 percent of the sun`s ray to penetrate, even on a bright sunny day. Thus the thickness of the national park is often compared with the Amazon forests of South America. Murlen National Park has some unique trees which are almost 350 years old. The forest has a specific area which is completely dark and does not allow a single sun`s ray to penetrate. This region is famed as `land of no return` or `losing area of seven fellow-men`. Common species of flora found here comprise Canes, Arundinaria callosa, Rhododendron, Prunus myrica, Pinus khasia, Michelia champaca, Betula specie, Schima wallichai, Quercus and several species of orchids.

Murlen National Park is the home to a vast variety of fauna including Himalayan Black Bear, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Barking Deer, Sambar, Leopard, Tiger, Hoolock Gibbon, Serow, Malayan Giant, Rhesus Macaque, Kallej Pheasant, Hume`s Pheasant, Dark Rumped Swift, Hill Myana, Common Patridges and many more. Murlen National Park however has also reported cases of poaching and hunting.

Visiting Information
Murlen National Park has emerged as an inviting tourist destination exhibiting breathtaking beauty of hills and gliding clouds during monsoon. The heavy rains and silver clouds present a resplendent view of the national park. Activities like bird safari, jungle safari and trekking can also be enjoyed here. Nearest railway station is in Silchar whereas the nearest airport is in Shillong. Murlen National Park can also be reached by road. National Highway 54 connects various parts of the country to Aizwal through Silchar from where Murlen National Park can be reached.
