The capital city of the state of Maharashtra namely, Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India. It is regarded as the most populous city in India and the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. This wealthiest city of India has the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Asiatic Society, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mount Mary Church, Temples, etc which draw a plethora of tourists to this state. Mosques of Mumbai are no exception in this regard. They also have the potential to catch the attention of tourists visiting this state.
Jama Mosque
The Jama Masjid is a mosque located in the Kalbadevi neighborhood, near Crawford Market in South Mumbai region. This mosque is valuable for the sunnis. They regard Jama Masjid as their main mosque. Its erection began in the year 1775 on a land that was owned by a Konkani Muslim merchant trading in Goa and Calicut. Architecturally, this Masjid is a quadrangular structure. It is made up of brick and stone. The eastern gate of the mosque will direct the visitors across an open courtyard to an old tank. The tank has been renovated and now has masonry steps and embankments. A school namely, the Madressa Muhammadiah and an extensive library with rare manuscripts are attached to the mosque. The school provides free secular and religious education to Muslim youths. The fully digitized library was shifted to the first floor of the Masjid and was inaugurated in April, 2015.
Haji Ali Dargah
Haji Ali Dargah is located in Worli in the middle of an island. This Dargah is known to be erected in 1431. It is a building with the burial chamber or tomb (mausoleum) of Pir Haji Ali Shah, who is recognized as a Sufi saint. This Dargah is a fine representation of the Islamic style of architecture with white domes and eye catching minarets. The gateway of the Dargah and the minarets are made up of marble. The interior of Haji Ali has been adorned with mirrors. Verses from the holy Quran are also written in some parts of the Dargah. Apart from the architecture, the Qawwali Khana also acts as a noteworthy aspect of the Dargah. Qawwali recitals are held in Qawwali Khana. In this Dargah, the relics of Prophet Muhammad are exhibited on the special day of Ed. Haji Ali is considered to be one of the most renowned and revered mausoleums of India.
