Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler, officially known as Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler, KCSI, Kt., CB, CIE, CVO, CBE, ICS, was one of the most prominent Governors of Central Provinces, which was established in the year 1861 by the amalgamation of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territoriees and Nagpur Province during the rule of the British Empire in India. He was also a member of the British Indian Civil Service. Rab Butler, who was a renowned British politician, was his son.

Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler was born on 19 May 1873 at Julian Hill in a grade II listed building in Harrow, London, to the parents Spencer Perceval Butler and Mary, the daughter of Reverend Nicholas Kendall of Bodmin. Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler KCSI, Kt., CB, CIE, CVO, CBE, ICS had 4 siblings, namely Arthur Francis Norman-Butler OBE, Sir George Geoffrey Gilbert Butler KBE, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler and Cyril Kendall Butler, KBE. Butler successfully completed his education from Haileybury and Pembroke College, Cambridge. In the year 1895 he became a Fellow of Pembroke.

Career of Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler
Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler joined the British Indian Civil Service, officially known as Imperial Civil Service, in the year 1896. Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler, KCSI, Kt., CB, CIE, CVO, CBE, ICS became the President of the Council of State of India and served in the position from the year 1924 to 1925. He acted as the Governor of the Central Provinces from the year 1925 to 1933. During this period, Butler also served as the Chancellor of Nagpur University. Eventually he left British India and went back to England. There he was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man in the year 1933. He served in office till the year 1937. Later Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler became Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge and served the position from 1937 to 1948. He was also appointed as the Mayor of Cambridge in the year 1941. He served in office till 1943.

Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler was appointed as a Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1909, Companion The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB), previously known as The Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath, in the year 1916, Commander of The Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1918 and Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the year 1920. Butler was appointed as a Knight Bachelor in the King`s Birthday Honours in 1924. Further more, he was knighted with Knight Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India (KCSI) in December 1924, after he was appointment as the Governor of the Central Provinces.

Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler, KCSI, Kt., CB, CIE, CVO, CBE, ICS was married with Ann Gertrude Smith in the year 1901. The couple had 2 children, a son named Rab Butler and a daughter named Iris Mary Butler. Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler died on 7 November 1955.
