Mokokchung is one of the third most important economic and political urban hubs in the state of Nagaland. It is the cultural epicentre of the Ao people. The town of Mokokchung is a municipality and the district headquarters of Mokokchung district.

Mokokchung is recognized by the Government of Nagaland as the "Land of Pioneers" because this place has produced a great number of luminaries in many fields. The town is made up of 16 wards of which Kumlong, Sangtemla, Alempang and Yimyu are the largest.

History of Mokokchung
History states that Mokokchung was one of the first Naga Hills sites. It was here the Assam Rifles, led by the British, established their outposts or stockades in the later part of the 19th century. Much of the town initially grew around this post located in the DC Hill. The British administration was then gradually extended eastwards towards the remote parts of the Naga Hills.

Climate of Mokokchung
Located at an elevation of 1325 m above sea level, Mokokchung has a mild climate throughout the year. The average temperature here is 18.6 degree Celsius with an average rainfall of 2039 mm. Precipitation is the lowest in December, with an average of 10 mm. In July, the precipitation reaches its peak, with an average of 419 mm. At an average temperature of 23 degree Celsius, July is the hottest month of the year. January is the coldest month of the year at an average temperature of 12 degree Celsius.

Demographics of Mokokchung
As per the Census India reports of 2011, Mokokchung had population of 194,622 of which male and female were 101,092 and 93,530 respectively. The population is predominantly Ao with Christianity being the main religion practised here.

Politics in Mokokchung
Mokokchung has significant political importance in the state. Over the last two decades, the town has become a stronghold of the Indian National Congress party which can be partly attributed to the fact that the party was led by S. Chubatoshi Jamir whose constituency was Aonglenden.

A centre of intellectualism and culture, Mokokchung has some popular tourist spots like the District Museum, the Town Main Park, Unman village, regarded as the oldest and largest and the Ao village. Other than these, tourists might also be interested in exploring places like Longkhum, Langpangkong, Mopungchukit and Chuchuyimlang located within the Mokokchung district. Since agriculture constitutes the main occupation in the area, festivals during the sowing and harvesting months are sure to enhance the tourist"s experience.
