In the Vishnu Purana, Mithi is considered to be a prince and son of the legendary hero Nimi. There is mythical story in which it is said that Nimi left no successor. The Munis were apprehensive of the consequences of the earth being without a ruler. They were troubled and thus preserved the body of Nimi, and produced from it a prince who was called Janaka, from being born without a progenitor. In consequence of being produced by agitation. This prince was later named as Mithi. In the Ramayana places the prince named Mithi between Nimi and Janaka, from where the city Mithila is named.
Mithi is also the name of a town in Tharparker District, Sindh province, now Pakistan, located 300 kilometers from Karachi. The town is located in a beautiful desert area. Mithi is the headquarters of Tharparker District. Mithi has a very fine picnic point, "Gaddhi", a 300 feet sand dune at the western side of town. Mithi is the starting point from where desert start.
Mahim River is also known as Mithi. The river is in Salsette Island, on which the city of Mumbai is located. It is a confluence of tail water discharges of Powai and Vihar lakes. The Mithi River is seasonal and swells during the monsoons.
