Matanga is a sage who lived in the wood of Rishyamuka. In the Ramayana, it is said that Lord Rama and Sita visited to the residence of Matanga near Rishyamuka Mountain.

Matanga cursed Bali, the monkey and charged him under pain of death never to enter the wood again. He had flung the dead body of the giant Dundhubi in the jungle of Rishyamuka after slaying him. The blood of the demon tainted the hermitage of the sage. After that Sugriva made this wood his residence, as he knew that he was there safe from the rage of his brother Bali. Sugriva succeeded as ruler of the vanara or monkey kingdom Kishkindha.
