As prescribed in the Puranas, Maru is the son of a Sighra and descendant of Lord Rama.

In the Vishnu Purana it is stated that Maru through the power of devotion and Yoga still lives in the village called Kalapa. It is said that Maru in the future age will be the restorer of the Kshatriya race in the solar dynasty.

Maru is also the name of the Hariyaswa. Hariyaswa was the King of Mithila.
