According to Puranas Marichi or Mareechi was one of ten Prajapatis and was the son of Lord Brahma. The word `Marichi` means a ray of light. He was again said to be one of the `Saptarshi`, Seven Great Sages Rishi in the first Manvantara.

There is a mythical story relating the origin of Marichi. Before creating the world Lord Brahma needed a few people who can be held responsible for the creation of the remaining universe. Thus he created ten Prajapatis, Ruler of the people from his Manas (Mind) and 9 from his body and Marichi is one of them.

Marichi was married to Sambhuti (fitness) one of the daughters of Daksha. She gave birth to Kashyapa who latter had great prosperity. Ravana, the mighty Asura king was also from the progeny of Marichi.

Marichi is said to be the name of one of the chief of the Maruts, or personified winds.
