Located in the Borwadi area in the Mangaon taluka of the Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra, the Mangad Fort is basically a survey fort. It is said that the fort was visited by the Maratha Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

History of Mangad Fort
The Mangad Fort was built during the period of 1757 to 1760 by Bhivrao Yashwant and Krishnaji Madhavarao Panse. The fort was under the Peshwa rule before it was surrendered to the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb as per the Treaty of Purandar. The band master powers of this fort were with the Phule family and the subhead powers were with Govindaji More.

In 1818, the Mangad Fort was captured by the British Empire under the administration of Colonel Prother. But after India gained independence, the fort came under the control of the Government of India.

Overview of Mangad Fort
Currently in ruins, the Mangad Fort stands at an elevation of 235 m above sea level. The fort is surrounded by the Jore valley in the south, the Konkan Diva Fort in the east and the village of Gangawali in the south west. At the base of the Mangad Fort, there is an old layout temple carved with scriptures of fish and lotus for the Hindu Goddess Vinzai. To the left of the fort are four water tanks or wells and a cave, which was once used for storing food grains.

By roadways, the city of Mumbai is about 112 km away from the Mangad Fort. The nearest railway station is at Mangaon at a distance of almost 20 km from the fort and the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is the closest at a distance of 152 km from the fort.
