Game of Indian Tennis
The game of Tennis is considered to be one of the most popular sports in India, in modern times. Being brought by the British rulers in the 18th century, Tennis has increased its popularity among the Indians day by day. Though it was being played in an unorganised manner for a long period, initiatives were taken during the first half of the twentieth century to manage Tennis in India. A large number of Tennis associations started to be established during that period for a better management of Indian Tennis.
Management Bodies of Tennis
The initiatives for a better management of Indian Tennis were started with the formation of the All India Lawn Tennis Association (AILTA) in March, 1920. The AILTA was established at Lahore, as a national governing body for Tennis in India. The name of the organisation was changed to All India Tennis Association (AITA) in the early half of 1980s. Since its inception, the AITA has been working relentlessly for the well being of Indian Tennis and it is promoting the game in India, as well. The AITA is in charge of organising and supervising any kinds of Tennis related activities in India.
All India Tennis Association (AITA)
Apart from the All India Tennis Association (AITA), there are also many state Tennis associations in India that are working at the state level to improve the scenario of Tennis in their state. The state Tennis associations are playing an important role in the management of Indian Tennis. They work in collaboration with the AITA to organise Tennis tournaments at different levels, be it in the district level or in the state level or in the national level. They also invite legendary Tennis personalities and conduct various training camps to teach the young talents, the nitty-gritty of Tennis.
Functions of Tennis Associations
Almost all the states in India have their respective Tennis associations, who work specifically for their respective state only. Being responsible for the management of Indian Tennis, the AITA and all the state level Tennis organisations take a lot of initiatives to patron the Indian Tennis players. Tennis Associations provide the players with adequate training facilities, modern sports accessories and also sometimes help the needy but talented players, financially. Arranging sponsors for various tournaments from the corporate sector is also another important task of the Indian Tennis organisations.
Some of the state Tennis associations in India have already got considerable success in their works and established themselves as great suppliers of talented Tennis players for India.
